"Escape Area 51" is a 2D pixel style arcade game, where the player is an alien trying to escape its human entrapment, based on the original Moon Patrol arcade game. This was my first foray into making games in graduate school was with a team of five people. We were tasked with designing a game that was modelled after a classic arcade game over a period of two weeks, and Moon Patrol was our inspiration to work on this quick prototype.
The inspiration we took for the original game:
Player is confined to a vehicle
No cooldown for continuous shooting
Overall design aimed to capture the essence of a high-score chasing game
In our game, an alien has broken out of a lab and is avoiding recapture. In this auto-scrolling shooter, the action is tense as an extraterrestrial takes control of a truck that has been hijacked. We added a strategic fuel system and a flying mechanic to liven things up. In order to secure a daring escape, players methodically gather fuel while taking out both air and ground enemies.
I contributed to the game development process by designing a seamless, tileable background that conveyed the atmosphere of a small town. I was also responsible for creating the main player character and designing several enemy characters to enhance gameplay diversity. I also drew the main character’s movement sprite sheet, ensuring fluid animations that contributed to smooth and engaging gameplay.
